Christmas Christmas

Christmas Day:

Christmas Day is an annual festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration by billions of people throughout the globe.  December 25 was first identified as the date of Jesus’ birth by Sextus Julius, the Father of Christian chronography.

Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries, it is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season organized around it. Christians often celebrate Christmas by giving and receiving presents and cards.

 Historical Background:

The origins of Christmas stem from both the pagan and Roman cultures. The Romans celebrated two holidays in December. The first was Saturnalia, which was a two-week festival honoring their god of agriculture Saturn. On December 25th, they celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god.

As Christianity spread across Europe, the Christian clergy were not able to curb the pagan customs and celebrations. Since no one knew Jesus’s date of birth, they adapted the pagan ritual into a celebration of His birthday.

Christians believe that Jesus is the light of the world, so the early Christians thought that this was the right time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. They also took over some of the customs from the Winter Solstice and gave them Christian meanings, like Holly, Mistletoe, and even Christmas Carols.

Santa Claus Role:

Since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays a pivotal role. Several closely related figures too as like Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Christ kind are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season.

Customs and Traditions:

The celebratory customs associated in various countries have a mixture of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, completing an Advent calendar, Christmas music and caroling, viewing a nativity play, and exchange of Christmas cards.

In addition, the Christians celebrate church services, a special meal, and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands and holly.

Almost a hundred percent of Americans and Christians celebrate Christmas each year, so it’s a widely celebrated holiday centered on many adorable traditions as eating lots of holiday foods and baking Christmas desserts.

There are so many ceremonies at this event as attending church services on Christmas Eve, decorating the houses, and exchanging gifts on the big day.
